Green Your Laundry Routine - Make Your Own Fabric Softener
Here’s the deal with fabric softeners - most of them contain tallow (even lots of “eco-friendly” brands), harsh chemicals and unnatural fragrances. Any fabric softeners that you buy in the store - whether you use liquid fabric softener or dryer sheets - produce waste and use way more energy, water and resources to produce and transport than making your own with simple household ingredients that you likely already have in your pantry.
While big name brands have used decades of convincing marketing to make us think we can’t have soft, clean-smelling, comfortable clothes without their chemical-laden products, this simply is not true.
While drying your clothes on a clothesline is certainly the most eco-friendly clothes drying method - and one that doesn’t require fabric softener of any kind, I might add - many of us are still using dryers out of necessity, convenience or because we feel like we lack the time or space for line drying.
Regardless of your reason for needing – or wanting – to use a dryer, you can green your laundry routine by replacing your current fabric softening method with simple baking soda and distilled white vinegar.
When I use a dryer to dry our clothes, I add about 2 tablespoons of distilled white vinegar and about ¼ to ½ cup baking soda before I start the washer and this gives us soft, clean smelling and static-free clothes every time!
